Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Program

(an interagency program in support of SOST)

Task Team 1: AMOC Observing System Implementation and Evaluation

The team is charged with the design and implementation of an AMOC monitoring system. AMOC monitoring in the U.S. is currently accomplished by a collection of field programs including: ARGO, JASON, the Global Drifter Array and collection of satellites returning ocean surface and meteorological information. Near-term priorities for this task team include:

  • the design of a subpolar North Atlantic and subtropical South Atlantic monitoring system;
  • assessing the importance of deep temperature and salinity measurements in monitoring AMOC variability; and
  • assessing the meridional coherence of AMOC changes in prognostic and state estimation models

The following science team members are part of the Observation task team.

  • Susan Lozier, Chair
  • Patrick Heimbach, Vice-chair
  • Kathleeen Donohue
  • George Halliwell
  • Bill Johns
  • Craig Lee
